Steel Structure Fireproof Coating Application Process

Steel structure fireproof coating is an important fire safety material. The quality of fireproof spraying directly affects its fire resistance and performance requirements. It should be applied by a professional team or under the guidance of engineers who developed the fireproof coating to ensure project quality.

In general, fireproof spraying should only be carried out after the steel structure has been installed in place, along with related components such as suspension rods, walkways, and pipe racks, and has passed inspection. If spraying is done in advance, and the fireproof coating is applied before lifting the steel components into position, any damaged coating and connection points must be re-sprayed after installation.

Before spraying, the steel surface should be derusted, and anti-rust treatment should be determined based on usage requirements. Both rust removal and fireproof treatment must comply with the relevant provisions of the "Code for Acceptance of Construction Quality of Steel Structure Engineering" (GB50205).

For most steel structures, an anti-rust primer is required. The anti-rust primer must not chemically react with the fireproof coating. Some fireproof coatings have a certain degree of anti-rust properties, so if testing confirms that an anti-rust primer is not necessary, rust-proof treatment may be omitted.

Before spraying, dust, oil stains, and other debris on the steel surface should be thoroughly cleaned. Gaps between steel components measuring 4–12 mm wide should be filled and leveled using fireproof coatings or other fireproof materials such as aluminum silicate fiber wool or fireproof sealing materials. If the steel surface has been coated with an anti-rust topcoat and the coating is hard and glossy, which could significantly affect the adhesion of the fireproof coating, the surface should be sanded with sandpaper before spraying.

The application of steel structure fireproof coatings should be done before interior decoration and under conditions where subsequent construction will not cause damage. During construction, walls, doors, windows, machinery, and other components that do not require fireproof protection should be covered with plastic sheeting for protection. The newly applied coating should be protected from rain, dirt contamination, and mechanical impact.
